The Rest Day Incentive

Posted: 27 October 2007

We rolled out of Cann River knowing that another good effort on the bike today would be rewarded with a rest day upon our arrival in the fishing town of Lakes Entrrance. Another 130 Kilometres was on the cards today and the climbs kept on coming. It was a civilised roll out from Cann River with some flat roads enabling us to warm up a little before once again going uphill!

The group settled into a nice rhythm but it was on a fairly innocuous stretch of road where we had our first crash of the event where Daniel Burger, wearing the green jersey, went down after clipping a wheel. It's always a horrible sight to see a rider go down and Daniel was left with some "bark" removed from his left leg and a swollen thumb. Ever the trooper, Daniel got back on his bike after being patched up and continued on for the day.

Upon reaching Orbost the weather had turned decidedly cold. Rain jackets and arm warmers were donned as we had a brief lunch stop and moved on to warmer climates a little further away from the Snowy's. The group broke into two after the lunch break and John Maclean once again joined us on the road. The hills were hard work for John but it was once again great for the group to be able to share the road with him on the ride into Lakes Entrance.

The last 10 Kilometres of todays race was a free-for-all with the stronger riders setting a strong pace and looking to take the "win" at our accommodation in Lakes Entrance. Clint, James, Jarrad, Joe, Russell and Daniel all had a strong finish to the day and most definitely earned a rest tomorrow.

Our evening was spent at the Tres Amigos restaurant were many a fajita, burrito and taco were consumed and the tequila was and Sangria was flowing freely. We had another birthday in the group today so cheers go out to Dave Coultas on celebrating his 38th with us!
